Field of application
[0001] The present invention relates to a press for PET bottles comprising means for compressing the bottle and a lever or an arm for actuating the compression means.
[0002] The present invention also refers to a method of compressing a PET bottle comprising the step of operating means for compressing the bottle by means of a lever or an arm.
Known art
[0003] It is known that a press for PET bottles (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is used to crush empty bottles, in order to reduce their bulk, both in a domestic or business environment, and for transport to a collection plant, and consequently to reduce disposal costs.
[0004] In fact, compressing the bottles more allows more material to be transported and the number of trips to centralized regional collection points to be reduced, thus reducing the fuel consumed by the collection and recycling companies, such as the Pet Recycling Schweiz PRS.
[0005] Known presses for home use can be inserted vertically or horizontally in the kitchen modules, for example sliding on module rails, or they are fixed to the wall or in a compartment of a closet or in a pantry room. Presses for professional use can also be mounted on top of containers managed by a PET collection and recycling company, such as «PET-Recycling Schweiz», or they can be mounted on so-called «Facility» carts, or fixed to walls in rooms business break, near the box containers.
[0006] Vertical crushing presses are designed to compress the bottle from the top to the bottom or vice versa, along the axis of the bottle.
[0007] However, such presses suffer considerable disadvantages and do not allow to reach a high percentage of recyclability of PET bottles, for example the percentage set by the Beverage Packaging Ordinance (OIB) in Switzerland (https: //www.admin. ch / opc / it / classified-compilation / 20001238 index.html).
[0008] In fact, in the case in which the bottle is partially or totally covered by a label, the vertical squeezing presses cause the label to be entrapped in the multiple folds that are formed by squeezing the bottle along the axis, and preventing it removal, even during PET recycling.
[0009] In other words, the bottles thus compressed increase the percentage of waste, both in the initial phase of sorting in the collection center, and in the subsequent phase in the recycling center, where optical readers are used to make a further selection of the material waste. Furthermore, vertically squeezed bottles are immediately destined for an incinerator since, under the conditions described above, it is not possible or convenient to apply more sophisticated recycling techniques.
[0010] Instead, a label not trapped in the bottle can be removed after an initial sorting phase. In this case, the bottle is subjected to a jet in a steam tunnel that separates the labels from the bottles. Subsequently, the bottles are chopped with the cork giving rise to a chopped material, which is left to settle so that the material deriving from the cork separates from that deriving from the bottle, rising to the surface, and thus allowing its removal. The remaining material, that is the one deriving from the PET bottle, is subjected to a washing and a drying and is further shredded and analyzed to then be sent to the prepressing centers of threaded capsules.
[0011] The technical problem underlying the present invention is to devise a press capable of overcoming the problems described above, thus allowing to optimize the spaces but at the same time to increase the recyclability of the PET bottle, to facilitate the crushing maneuver , thus making the press a domestic tool for everyday use and within everyone's reach, achieving a considerable saving of space in the home but also a more effective and economic collective collection, and significantly reducing the percentage of PET waste.
Summary of the invention
[0012] On the basis of the solution idea set forth above, the technical problem is solved by a press for a PET bottle comprising a base and compression means of the bottle against the base, characterized in that said compression means are structured to crush the bottle lengthwise.
[0013] According to an aspect of the invention, the compression means comprise a first crushing surface intended to compress the bottom of the bottle and a second crushing surface intended to crush the side or side surface of the bottle. The second crushing surface starts working on the side before the bottom is contacted by the first crushing surface.
[0014] In particular, the second crushing surface begins to operate on the side of the bottle, deforming the side and consequently forcing the bottom to bend towards a base of the press, substantially tilting towards it. At this point, the bottom of the bottle is contacted by an arm associated with a wheel (wheel), which forms the first crushing surface, and is squeezed between the wheel and the base of the press.
[0015] According to an embodiment of the invention, the first crushing surface and the second crushing surface (arm with roller) can be operated by the same lever. A handle of the lever protrudes from a boxed body of the press, inside which the crushing means and the lever itself are fixed.
[0016] According to another aspect of the invention, the first crushing surface comes into contact with the bottom of the bottle after the second crushing surface comes into contact with the surface or side of the bottle. The crushing surfaces are shaped to crush bottles having capacities between 0.51 and 21 and various shapes. Said surfaces leave the neck and the bottle cap free to allow easy closing of the bottle after compression, before the compressed bottle is removed from the press, thus preventing air from entering the bottle, expanding it again.
[0017] The first crushing surface is adjustable according to the size of the bottle to be crushed; for example the arm and the relative wheel of the first crushing surface can be moved away or brought closer to an opening of the press, to increase or decrease the seat in which the bottle is received, always leaving the neck of the bottle outside the opening of the press .
[0018] In particular, the crushing means crush the bottle along a plane passing through the axis of the bottle or along a parallel plane.
[0019] According to an embodiment of the invention, the first crushing surface is delimited by a block rotatably fixed to a pin. The block is located beyond the bottom of the bottle, before the press is activated, and is able to intercept an upper portion of the bottom and crush the bottom towards the base, starting from a predetermined angular position. In said angular position, a part of the side or side surface of the bottle near the bottom is already squeezed inwards, between the bottom and a opposite side of the bottle.
[0020] The initial crushing of the side towards the base of the press by the second crushing surface forces the bottom of the bottle to make an initial folding towards the base of the press, subsequently allowing the first crushing surface, and in particular the wheel and to the relative arm, to go into operation to push the bottom definitively towards the base. At the same time, the second crushing surface continues to operate on the side of the bottle, flattening it longitudinally on itself.
[0021] The second crushing surface is delimited by a second block rotatably fixed to the first block by the same pin. The second block is located above the side or side surface of the bottle, before the press is activated, and is able to squeeze the side or side surface of the bottle together with the bottom, in the meantime already inclined by the first surface. crushing, starting from a second predetermined angular position, advanced with respect to the first angular position. In other words, the wheel arm (first crushing surface) starts working on the bottom, without substantial deformation of the bottom, only after the side is partially flattened.
[0022] At the end of the compression, the bottle is flattened longitudinally. The press can be operated by the lever fixed to the first block and to the second block.
[0023] Preferably, the press comprises a boxed body, which can be inserted into a kitchen drawer, comprising at least one opening for inserting the bottle and a seat for the compression means and for the lever. A lever handle protrudes from the box-shaped body, preferably upwards.
[0024] The lever can be manual or automatic, for example electrically powered and operated by a digital button.
[0025] Further features and advantages of the bottle press according to the present invention will become apparent from the description which follows, given for exemplifying and non-limiting purposes with references to the attached drawings.

Detailed description
[0027] In fig. 3 and 4 schematically represent a press according to the present invention. The press is a compact and functional tool, designed to reduce the effort required to effectively compress the bottle on its side and be easy to use. The press is operated by a handle or lever 6.
[0028] In fig. 3 the press is indicated with 1 and is equipped with crushing means 3, in particular a first and a second crushing surface 4, 5, which initially operate on a side 11 of the bottle 10 and then also on a bottom 12.
[0029] Fig. 1 schematically represents the compressed bottle 10 according to the present invention: the bottle is folded longitudinally; the bottom 12 is folded over the length of the bottle, without substantial deformation of its original shape. The side 11 is folded against the opposite side 13.
[0030] According to an embodiment of the invention, the first crushing surface 4 is delimited by a block 44 rotatably fixed to a pin 7 which, before actuating the press, is situated beyond the bottom 12 of the bottle; the block is adapted to intercept an upper portion of the bottom and to press the bottom 12 towards the base 2 of the press, starting from a predetermined angular position.
[0031] The crushing surface 5 is delimited by a second block 55 rotatably fixed to the first block 44 by means of a second pin 8; the second block 55 is located above the side or side surface 11 of the bottle, before the press is actuated, and is able to squeeze the side or side surface 11 of the bottle together with the bottom 12 towards the base 2, starting from a second predetermined advanced angular position with respect to the first angular position.
[0032] By operating the lever 6, first the crushing surface 5 starts working on the side of the bottle, deforming it on the side and also causing a corresponding recall of the bottom of the bottle. In particular, the bottom rotates on an axis passing through a diameter of the bottom perpendicular to the axis of the bottle. Some deformations of the bottom can however occur during said recall or rotation.
[0033] According to a preferred embodiment, the block 55 comprises a cam 55a associated with a plate 55b for crushing the longitudinal part of the bottle (side), which forms the second crushing surface 5. The wheel cam 55a is in contact with the plate 55b and gives it a reciprocating motion, that is to say approaching it towards the bottle for the compression phase and moving it away from it for the opening of the press.
[0034] The second block 44 comprises a wheel (or wheel) 77 and a second plate 44b which forms the first crushing surface 4. The block 44 is also connected to the lever 6. Furthermore the cam 55a of the second block and the plate 44b of the first block 44 are pivoted in the second pin 8.
[0035] Operationally, when the plate 55b associated with the block 55 has partially compressed the side of the bottle, lowering towards it for a predetermined length due to the action of the lever 6, the plate 44b associated with the other block 44 has performed a predetermined angular displacement , coming into contact with the bottom of the bottle, already partially rotated to recall the side; by exerting further pressure on the lever 6, the plate of the block 44 presses the bottom of the bottle towards the base of the plate, closing the bottom on the side.
[0036] Advantageously, the applicant of the application has provided for shaping the cam 55b as an eccentric with a contoured contour according to curved arcs which considerably reduce the effort to be applied to the lever 6 to effectively compress the bottle.
[0037] Preferably, the press is enclosed in a boxed body, made of stainless steel or chrome. The lever system and the members of the press, that is to say the blocks 55, 44 and the relative arms for connection to the lever 6, are enclosed by a PVC or transparent PET safety plate, which prevents the user's hands from accidentally coming into contact with said organs, during the positioning of the bottle in the press or during its operation, allows at the same time to observe the movement of the organs in the press, even during the compression operations. The blocks 55 and 44 are made of stainless steel like the rest of the box-shaped body. The lever 6 has an ergonomic plastic handle.
[0038] Advantageously, the press 1 does not require maintenance and is easy to clean. The box-shaped body is equipped with side shoulders to protect the user during compression, in particular to protect the hands. The compression can be performed with one hand, in a few seconds, leaving the other hand free to screw the cap after compressing the bottle.
[0039] The compressed bottle can be extracted from the press or dropped down into special collection containers, depending on the mode of installation of the press, that is with opening of the press facing upwards (by manual extraction) or downwards (for free-fall expulsion).
[0040] The use of the press according to the invention facilitates the compression of the bottle, reduces the time and effort required to perform this operation, reduces the bulk of the compressed bottles and consequently the transport costs, increases the recyclability of the material , and simplifies and speeds up the sorting phase.
[0041] The press overcomes the so-called "crush and stage" recommendation of PRS PET-Recycling, since this recommendation is suggested to be carried out by hand (without presses) but the result is not entirely satisfactory, both for the effort required to compress some rigid bottles with compression resistant ribs, especially on the bottom, due to the rigidity of the material.
[0042] Furthermore, in some cases, PEF «Furanoate Polyethylene or Plantbottle» from 30% to 100% vegetable is used, which is even drier and harder than PET to the point of preventing most people from being able to perform manual compression.
[0043] The compactness of the press according to the invention and the simple two-step compression method, ie the first crushing on the body of the bottle and then the bending and flattening of the bottom, make it a particularly attractive and effective use tool.
[0044] The laid press can be fixed or wall mounted or mobile on facility service trolleys; it can be equipped with fixing plates and therefore create a transportable and functional tool in different environments. It is envisaged that the press be operated manually, by means of a manual lever, or electrically or pneumatically, by means of appropriate electrical and / or mechanical means. According to simple dimensional modifications, it is possible to compress bottles of various sizes and / or cans.
